What are Copilot and Business Chat announced at the “Reinventing Productivity with AI” event

Following the Microsoft The Future of Work: Reinventing Productivity with AI virtual event on March 16th 2023, I was asked to summarize what Copilot and Business Chat are. Here is my summary plus the available resources to learn more.

Copilot sits alongside existing Microsoft 365 tools and can be used to help us whilst we work with those apps and services such as Word, OneNote, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams & Outlook. We’ll use Copilot to do things like ‘Create a 20 slide presentation from this reference manual’.

Copilot is built into Microsoft 365 and probably will be unlocked by a premium licence (TBC). It works by taking text commands from you in the form of prompts such as ‘create a presentation …’) to generate content based on existing content combined with additional information you include in the prompt or additional content such as asking for a new presentation in the style of an existing one. You will also be able to use it to improve your content without the need to know how the product works, such as asking Word to generate a table of contents or add a title page.

Business Chat will be a new tool working across all of Microsoft 365 as an assistant doing things such as answering queries such as ‘Are there any outstanding issues from my meetings with ClientX in the last month?’ Business Chat is designed to search and summarise your content, calendar, emails, chats, meetings etc to help you collect information together.
